Important Information about Prozac

1. Inform your doctor about any medication you are taking now or have taken recently.

You should not take Prozac if you are taking any of the following drugs:

  • an MAO inhibitor such as: selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), tranylcypromine (Parnate), rasagiline (Azilect), isocarboxazid (Marplan) or phenelzine (Nardil);
  • pimozide (Orap);
  • thioridazine (Mellaril).
If you take these medications together with Prozac it can lead to severe consequences and even to death. You should wait minimum two weeks after you finish taking MAOI drugs before starting to use Prozac. Similarly, no less than five weeks should pass after you stopped taking Prozac before you can take any drug of MAO inhibitors group or thioridazine (Mellaril).

2. Your doctor should know about your allergic reactions to any drugs.

3. Provide the specialist with the list of all diseases you are having or have had recently, or about your chronic diseases, especially if you suffer from the following ones:
  • Manic depression (bipolar disorder);
  • Diabetes;
  • Cirrhosis of the liver;
  • Seizures or epilepsy;
  • A history of suicidal thoughts and/or drug abuse;
  • Kidney disease.
Another antidepressant may be prescribed to you if you are having any of these health disorders or specific dose of Prozac may be advised to be taken.

4. Depression treatment with Prozac in pregnant women can lead to serious lungs damage in newborn babies. On the other side if you stop taking Prozac abruptly, even during pregnancy, it can cause a relapse of depression. Thus, you should not take any measures without talking to your doctor. If you are breast-feeding, your doctor should know about it because Prozac can penetrate in the breast milk and be harmful for a newborn baby.

5. Remember that Prozac is prescribed to you only and you must not share it with other people even if they have symptoms similar to yours. It is strongly forbidden to give Prozac to people under 18 years old without doctor’s order.
